For history lovers, I would suggest at least staying/visiting 2 of the 3 towns. The restaurant atmosphere is wonderful we sat outside and it is quite magical. Once at the base of Mt Etna you take a cable car and then a small bus up to the summit. A great destination for a secluded getaway for couples, Alicudi and Filicudi if you are looking for more of an isolated place. For the beautiful beaches and good nightlife head down to the town of San Leone, 10 minutes from Agrigento. It is rather hilly and you do want to be somewhere where you are able to walk to the main street and to the beach. Besides the amazing view over Trapani and the west coast, I suggest getting lost within the historical street, lanes and alleys of this unique small town, absolutely a gem. The old town of Ortygia is the place to stay, eat and wander. The best time to go is early evening kick-off about 30 minutes before the sunset. With a short stay, I would consider booking my accommodation in Palermo and explore from there. Piazzas San Giovanni and Matteotti are buzzing on summer evenings, with restaurants, gelaterias and cultural events, including a literature festival in June. I noticed the one time we flew into Catania, that there are buses just outside the airport exit doors, to Taormina as well as many other places. There are A LOT of boat trip options available in Salina. Lanzarote is in Spains Canary Islands. The tour buses to Mt Etna stop not very far from the Elios, should you wish to go there. On the edge of Ragusa, Villa Boscarino (from 90 B&B) looks equally medieval but was built in 1895 by a society doctor to escape the cholera in town. Ordinary homes in streets north of the centre house residents probably bemused by the designer shades and mankles, and theres a grocery here for normal-priced picnic supplies.
