Curious to know if your stink has been cured. I know this isnt the politically correct thing to say but after trying so many different detergents and add ins (borax, oxyclean, vinegar etc) , cleaning routines (soaking, boiling, countless rinses) I decided to try a bit of bleach in my hot wash as recommended to me by the wonderful lady at Green Mtn Diapers. Apparently, Rockin Green achieves a similarly satisfying result. After two weeks on the meds and A&D ointment, his butt looked alot better. Ammonia is a gas and gasses dont dissolve hardly at all in hot water (unlike solids). Use Funk Rock. I use this at least once a week in Austin, TX and suggest to my clients in Austin to use this at least once a week as well being we have awful hard water in Austin as well.
With my battle with ammonia, what I have found to work for my cloth chinese prefolds and Econo-bum covers is: Place 1/2 cup grocery store borax in with the diapers and covers Run a prewash cycle with 1/2 cup of Bac-Out Wash cycle with 1/2 tablespoon Nellies Laundry Soda and 1 tablespoon of Nellies Oxygen Brightener. That was until we switched to RnG classic rock. His bottom burns went away for awhile, but now theyre back. I would use Funk Rock first though, and then follow her rinsing suggestions.
Im new into this and only using cloth on my 7 week old right now, but I am worried about the future. After the soak and rinsing, I put him in a double stuffed BG 3.0 for the night. This was before the different formulas came out. Thankfully it only happens once a month or less but why in the world would only some of my diapers have ammonia issues? You HAVE to SCRUB them! But rinsing most of them out right after use, especially the night time ones, seems to prevent the ammonia from building up in the first place. :-( Hes also been red and raw if for some reason we end up going more that two hours between diaper changes. i too have tried varying methods of getting out the funk with no success. I rinse every morning and it really seems to help as I have not had to resort to stripping or special soaps. The lower pH levels make these detergents gentler on cloth diapers and other fabrics, and they're safer for sensitive skin. Several cold (?)
